The decade of El Diego, of Sacchi’s Milan and of Platini’s France, the eighties saw some beautiful football produced against what was, particularly in Europe, a background of seismic socio-political change. Now a fully globalised sport marketed in all corners of the earth, the eighties was an era of international icons and, arguably for the last time, genuinely unique tactical innovation.
